Promoter arrested in Tangra tilted building case, will be presented in Court today

Rajat Lee (68), the promoter of the tilted building located at 11/1 Christopher Road in Tangra, Kolkata, was arrested today in connection with a case under Section 401A of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Act. The arrest occurred during a raid conducted at approximately 5:35 AM near Noorani Masjid in Tiljala. Lee, the son of the late Davit Lee, was named in the FIR related to the structural instability of the building, which was found to be dangerously tilted, posing a significant risk to its residents and surrounding areas.

The case, registered as PS Case No. 06 dated January 22, follows an investigation into the cause of the tilt. The building’s condition was reported by local residents, leading to further scrutiny by the authorities. The KMC Act, under which Lee was arrested, addresses issues related to unsafe buildings and the violation of construction norms. Following his arrest, Lee is set to be presented in the Senior Municipal Magistrate's court today during court hours, where he will face charges related to unsafe building construction.

On January 22, an under-construction building on Christopher Road in Tangra area of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) tilted towards an adjacent building. The company started the construction of the building last year. Rajat is the owner of that promoting company. In a short time, this five-storey multi-storey building was almost ready. But during the construction work, it tilted and spread panic among the residents.

As soon as the incident came to light, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation was shaken. The building was ordered to be demolished. But last week, when the building was demolished, the civic workers faced protests from the residents. It was mainly the women of the house who protested. "Where will we go if our house is demolished? We have nowhere to go, so we will not leave this house while we are alive." There was a long argument between the two sides. However, the municipality later started the demolition work.
